Did You Know?…

  • Young carers can provide personal care like dressing, washing and toileting
  • They may deal with finances, medication and attend to medical emergencies, including speaking to professionals or taking the person their care for to the doctors
  • They may have to help look after younger members of the family or do more housework, shopping and cooking than is usually expected of a child their age.
  • Young carers can often feel guilty, worried, frustrated and angry but may not feel comfortable talking about their situation.
  • They can find it difficult to concentrate at school, struggle to do homework or get to school on time.
  • They can find it hard to make or keep friends for long because they can’t do all the things their friends can do.
  • Young Carers also find it hard to go out and have time for themselves, and often don’t know other who are in the same situation – which can make them feel different or lonely!
  • However – young carers can develop independent skills quite early in their lives.  They can be mature for their age and by the nature of what they can be very caring, kind and responsible young people who are proud of the care and support they give to their loved ones.
